(That's almost certainly fake pic.) Nevertheless, the media hype is in overdrive, signalling a growing impatience for the next piece of truly game-changing tech (ie. not Google's Nexus One phone) and some clever Apple marketing (ie. leaking stuff to take the focus off competing launches at CES).
I thought I'd summarise what everyone's banging on about. Note, this could all be wrong. But that's hype for you.
- 7.1-inch or 10.1-inch screen, or both (two devices)
- 120GB hard drive
- Built-in camera
- Built-in 3G
- OLED touchscreen
- 2.26Ghz Intel Core Duo
- 2GB RAM
- Mac OSX 10.7 (Clouded Leopard)
- Aluminium casing
- Cost $1000
Orange France exec 'confirming' the launch.
Developers told to tweak apps for new format.
Wall Street Journal specs and launch 'leak'.
'Internal' Apple spec sheet.
The 'iSlate.com' registration form.
If the above is correct, or even close, the gadget space is about to get... Interesting.
So would you buy one?

If that is (and it is a big if) the spec and there is software to handle newspaper and magazine delivery and daily syncing a la podcasts, potentially through iTunes I will be in the queue like a shot.
What no one seems to be talking about is readability, and the device needs to have a good e-ink package as per the Kindle so that it is easy on the eyes. With that as part of the suggested OSX 10.7, then Sony, Amazon etc are in trouble and sales of e-books and Mr Murdoch's e-newspapers could rocket.
Can't wait to see what is announced, but expect the software associated with the hardware to be as important as the device itself.
Jan 27th is already in the diary to be checking in on what happens.
that's my wishlist Apple, if your listening.
